Anglo Saxon Select Fyrd - Tumbling Dice

$

Set AS3.
8 bods and 8 kite shields. Two poses were repeated so didn´t get painted.
This lot are the "rich kids", landowners, freemen so unlike the huscarls they have thier own colours on thier shields.
Close ups
Pose on the far right is one of the repeated poses
Pose on the far left is one of the repeated poses
As with a lot of the infantry sets from TD, wether the repeat poses are the same in each set isn´t clear. If I had got two sets of the above, it could have shown wether they have the same repeat poses or wether the repeat poses are random.

Anglo Saxon Huscarls with Axes - Tumbling Dice

Set AS1. 8 bods in 7 poses and 8 kite shields.
These are "Late" Anglo Saxon shields,  carried by the great majority of the figures representing the "English" as shown in the Bayeux Tapestry.*
As they are the leaders personal Body Guard and elite soldiers I´ve painted them as a "uniform" bunch.
Close ups
The two on the right are the repeat pose. The axe head is in the original position on the bod on the far right.

 *  "Wiley Blackwell encyclopedia of Anglo-Saxon England"    under the titel "Arms and Armour"(2nd edition available as PDF - pages 69 onwards)
and N.P.Brooks"Weapons and Armour"  in the "Battle of Maldon AD 991"
The only description of the colours of Anglo Saxon shields  is from Beowulf which tells of the shields as being "bright" and "Yellow".
Yellow? Plain wood ? Saxon shields are described in English Poetry as being made of lime wood (yellowish) and a range of shields using different wood types have been found. None though showing signs of being painted.

Anglo Saxon Mounted Huscarls - Tumbling Dice

Set AS10.
8 Bods, 8 shields (4 lenticular, 4 flat round) 4 swords, 3 spears and 2 axes.
Thier mounts are 2 sets (each set has 4 Nags) of  C1066 H2, Destrier / Heavy Horse.
The 8 Nags from both sets have 5 different poses, a similar set up to the nags provided for the Mounted Vikings, so rather than repeat what I wrote there about the possible pose selection, my review can be read HERE.

I was going to give  the bods Lenticular Shields left over from other TD Anglo Saxon sets. My fisrt thought was that using the Kite shields, wether historically correct or not, would, IMHO, make them look way to similar to Norman Cavalry. But then, I thought, they are Late Anglo-Saxons, and Huscarls and also, they could be used as Norman cavalry...so they ended up with Kite shields
Also, they got the same regimented look as the foot Huscarls.
I´ve also swopped the lances for home made ones.
Close ups.
The diferent Nag Poses that come with both sets are numbered.
Number 1 in pic two should be 5

Wether the Vikings used Cavalry in combat is..?..not so provable but Anglo-Saxon Cavalry? Yep, they did have them. See HERE

Anglo Saxon Command - Tumbling Dice

Set AS20.
3 mounted Bods in 3 different poses and 3 nags in 3 different poses, 2 foot Bods.
3 round (lenticular ) shields, 3 kite shields.
3 standards -  1 triangular, 1 square and a draco.
The three nags are poses from the C1066 H3 Palfrey/light Horse set.
I added two kite shields left over from other sets.
I changed the flags for printed ones. The metal flags are ok but too heavy and, TBH, the printed ones are easier and quicker than painting them myself.
The Draco I painted with a Blue-Gold drybrush to give it a shine. Works in reality but doesn´t really show in pics.

Hospitaller Knights

From Valdemar -  VM062 Hospitallers.
Just to get my hand and eye back into painting medievals.

Two Templar Knights.
Poor fellow Soldiers of Christ and the Temple of Solomon
The one on the right has  the colours are the ones used on thier Battle flag but they look good and make a change from the red cross on white.

Knight of St Thomas
Hospitallers of St Thomas of Canterbury at Acre

Knight of St John
Order of the knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem

Knight of St Lazarus.
Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem
I´ve painted these before but as Foot Bods (HERE)
Weapons (swords/Mace), shields, sword sheaths (both empty and with sword) and the head of the downed Nag,  are all seperate.

When painting the nags I advise choosing the final colour scheme and painting the underside before attaching them to a base. Not only is  the underneath of the Caparisons visible (not so well in the pics) but the legs as well.

Legs. A couple of the Nags are posed with just two hoofs on the ground. I used a Pattex Perfect Pen, which  contains Loctite Super Attak gel. Takes a few seconds to hold and a few more minutes to dry but it works on Metal to metal, Metal to card, plastic.

Frankish Crusader Command - Tumbling Dice

5 Bods and three nags. 3 standards and a shepards crook and 5 Heater shields. 5 shields is a bit odd because, unless one is strapped to the back of the foot knight , only three are needed. I left the shield off the bishop Bod.
I also replaced two of the standards using ones leftover from TD and Valdemar sets.
Erard´s standard is one from the set.
Erard de Valery.
Boniface de Montferrat. and Standard bearer.
Templar Bishop (were there such things?) and a Monk.
The Monk. Peter the Hermit perhaps?

Medieval Russian Peasant Levy - Strelets

Full  (and correct) titel "Russian Peasant Levy in Winter Dress".
I´ve looked at them over at PSR a few times and dismissed them as ..well, being way too ugly and, what would I possibly do with Russian peasants?
Anyway, I decided, after seeing some conversion potential and that they could possibly be opposition for vikings, I got them.

Basic colour scheme, even thier shields I´ve painted as plain wood without any symbols on them..
Close ups
The Bod far right had his arm repositioned (hot water) and him and the one on the far right have had metal spears added. The one second from right has had a new javelin* added.
Conversions. New weapons, a couple of head swops and one has had a shield swop
They´re a poorly armed bunch. Each one of them only has a single weapon, so the one lobbing a javelin*  has little hope after chucking it,  apart from;
1. Knock down one of the opposition with his javelin and pinch his weapon. Not that good a plan, as the opposing bod would more than likely be a distance away.
2. One of the opposition chucks a javelin. Hopefully, It doesn´t cause him or one of his mates  any damage and it´s not broken so he can re-use it. If one of his mates gets hit,  he would have to be close enough to be able to retrieve the javelin.
3. One of his mates gets knocked down making his weapon available. Again, his mate would need to be near him.

Edit;
Another conversion. Bow arm taken from StreletsArmy of Henry V set (one kneeling, right side third row down from the top), mace removed, hand trimmed a bit and then squashed with pliers to make a fingers like imprint. Arrows from the Zvezda English Infantry of the 100yrs war.
Ok..he isn´t using a classic russian recurve bow but, hey- he´s a peasant.

Medieval slingers

$

I´ve already  made a couple of medieval slingers  using the  fustibalus Staff sling HERE.
They were unarmoured and due to using staff slings they carry no shields whilst using the slings.
Anyway, for a while I´ve  wanted some more medieval slingers using shepards Slings and with headswops,  the Norman Light slingers from Tumbling Dice fill my wish.
Swords and shields added from the bits box

Did medieval shepard slingers use shields?
A couple of pics from  the twelth century  Liber ad honorem Augusti sive de rebus Siculis ("Book in honour of the Emperor, or on Sicilian affairs"; also called Carmen de motibus Siculis, "Poem on the Sicilian revolt") showing slingers with shields.
Also..a bit later, a soldier using sling with a shield on a 15th century painting of the  Battle of Nájera
Loads more contemporary pics of slingers, with and without shields HERE
HERE it´s shown that a shield and sling can be used in combination

Set FE20. 8 bods in 8 poses.
I could have painted them as generic peasntry, Robin Hood style but went for  colours worn by quite a few Counts and lords who took part in the 3rd Crusade - Red/yellow and Blue/yellow.
Yellow/Blue - They could be levy for Robert de Montfort, Ranulf de Glanville. Guillaume de St Omer, Robert de Bethune among others.
iRed/Yellow. Levy for Jaques d´Avenses, Guy de Craon, Michel de Harnes, Rodger de Harcourt, Gerard de Loos, Thomas Basset and loads more.

Found chucked away in a skip. A way lot bigger than the usual Bods (she´s 8cm´s tall) but it made a change to upsize and have a rest from historical wargame themed Bods.
Made from Resin, I think the big water lilly was meant for a tea light.
All colours from Art and craft shops, Makes -Kreul or Hobbyline.
To paint The wings were the biggest problem and TBH, I´m not happy with the result.

I´ll give her away as a present.

Set FE21.
8 bods in 8 poses.
Weapons. 3 staff slings, a crossbow, a scythe, a sickle, 2 axes, a bow, 2 spears, a garden hoe and a two pronged hay fork.
A decent looking mob of extra light infantry and usefull for a wide range of  settings acrosss the medieval  period.

More staff slingers! They seem to be like buses, wait ages for one and then three come along at once.

Medieval Russian Militia - Strelets

Like the Medieval Russian Peasant Levy from Strelets, I´ve looked at them over at PSR and thought "Yuk!" but got both sets after seeing some conversion potential in the Peasant levy set. Not too many conversion possibilites with this set....so far.

One was holding a square shield, that got swopped for a round one.
The javelin thrower had his, what looked like a stiff snake, swopped.
One of the repeat poses has been converted to the standard bearer with a printed flag.

Anyway, they´ve been hanging around waiting for paint  for a while so they´ve finally got some.
Tiny amount of Flash to deal with.
Things for  stabbing and chucking
Things for hacking
Things for clubbing and bashing
Standard bearer and I reckon the one in the great coat is the boss

War of the Roses - Armoured Longbowmen

Set WR6 Armoured Longbowmen.
8 bods in the set, one of them is a repeat pose and I broke my rule* of not painting repeat poses unless the bod has had at least some small conversion  like a weapon or head swop, and painted him.

Painted in the colours of John Bourchier - 2nd Lord Benners.
Close ups
Repeat pose on the left

*Not really a hard and fast rule more something to keep in mind so that I don´t end up with dozens of replicas.

PS. In the future I won´t be linking to and I will be altering or deleting any links to Wikipedia.

WotR´s cannons and crew - Tumbling dice

Labelled on the TD site as WR23 Small Cannon and Crew or WR21 Organ Gun and Crew.
4 bods in 4 poses with a single barrel cannon (Veuglaire) or a three barreled Organ gun, both of  which come in 4 parts, wheels, barrel(s) and trail.
The Bods needed a bit of flash removing as did the wheels but it was minimal and being metal, easy.
The crew.
Both guns came with 4 man crews but in the same poses. Ok, a couple have different helmets but unless I find time or reason, I´ll leave it at just the 4.

Uruks riding Wargs

$

0

RedBox´s Alliance range, Original titel "Warg Half Orcs" but I reckon, seeing as Uruks are a half breed creature their mounts would also be Half breeds. Wargs crossed with Hyenas!! Not the modern spotted hyena but the pre-historic Cave Hyena (Crocuta crocuta Spelaea). The beast was reckoned to weigh 225 Kilos!!

Anyway, as my contribution to Orctober. 11 of the 12 have been painted as one of them was supposed to represent  Saruman but ended up as Merlin

5 of the ?..what are they? Wargs not, Hyenas also not. Wyenargs? Anyway, 5 of the Wyenargs were dumped into boiling water and then had thier heads repositioned.

Command
It looks as if one of the  Wyenargs skulls ended up being used as part of the standard. I hope it died a peacefull death but..TBH, I doubt it.

Wargs are described (By Tolkien) as being sentient and having a proto language "the dreadfull language of the wargs " which Gandalf could understand. Given that, a body of Orcs/Uruks mounted on Wargs would pose quite a problem. Being fast, they could be used to go to the flanks or rear of an enemy and when there, the orcs/Uruks could dismount to fight on foot with the wargs alongside them, effectively doubling thier force.

Minotaurs

$
0
0

32 of them in 8 different poses. RedBox and labelled as being on the Dark Alliance side. Minotaurs, are they baddies, neutral or good?

The whole herd together.

"Rocky", "Bull the Butcher" and "Sirus"

"Axel", "Boxer" and "Lance"
Lance is missing half of his left horn. Wether this is deliberate or due to the mold I don´t know but I assume it´s deliberate.

"Bones"and"Thore"

They are big. Depending on Pose, they range, from hooves to top of their heads (not including horns) between 28-30mm.
Here´s "Bully" between  Italeri and Perry bods

Steppes Warriors - Set 2

$
0
0

Labelled as Steppes warriors these, considering Alliances other fantasy output,  are definately the Riders of Rohan. One of them even  looks like Theoden.

12 bods and 12 nags in 6 poses.  You also get two lances, 2 shields, a bow in its holder, a quiver of arrows, a mace and a sword. The bow or quiver can be attached, peg into hole,  to one of the nags. The Shields attach, peg and hole, to the backs of the archers. The peg is on the archers quivers so it can be removed to give a bit of variety if the whole set were to be painted. The mace, sword and lances, although nice looking and easy to remove from the sprue,  I swopped them out for metal ones from the spares box.

Zero flash on both the bods and the nags. As far as I can remember,  it´s the first set   I´ve bought without any flash that needs removing. Ok, I removed clumps of grass that  were on the hooves but that wasn´t necessary, just a personal preference.

Uniform colour scheme.

Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!

Fell deeds awake, fire and slaughter!

spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,

a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!

Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

Close ups
Each nag has a secondary weapon slung on the right except for one which has a rope.
The nag with the bow quiver. The hole could be filled and using a 1mm drill, a hole can be drilled in any of the other nags.

Archers
Boss
Like em? I love them. 💗
The detail is top notch. Not clear in the pics but Lower leg and forearm armour has straps with clearly defined buckles. A couple of helmet plumes needed repositioning so they are flowing in the direction of movement. The holes in the hands for attaching weapons are a wee bit small but that´s easily sorted and better small holes than ones which are too big leaving the weapon dangling at an odd angle.
